Chapter 16: Bern Village

A nudging on her cheek awoke Elaina, long before dawn could gleam through her window. Elaina sat straight up in the dark. Davu bumped his head against the bed. Gently Elaina brushed her hand along his head. “What is it, Davu?”

“I’m hungry.”

“Now? Okay. I’m coming.” Not bothering to stifle a yawn, Elaina shoved the comforter off her legs and dragged herself out of bed. She threw on her jacket, coat, and weapon pack. Together Elaina and Davu snuck outside in search of something for Davu to eat.

The door opened behind Elaina, informing her that she and Davu were not alone. “Is everything alright, Elaina?” Master Kijani asked.

“Davu is hungry. I’m going hunting.” Elaina rubbed her eyes.

A chuckle behind her made Elaina wonder if Master Kijani understood what she was experiencing. He caught up to Elaina, “We don’t allow trainees to hunt in the forest at night alone. Not even masters wander alone in the forest at night. I’ll come with you.”

Elaina had traveled in the forest alone for months, not counting Larissa who wasn’t any help. The idea of going into the forest alone didn’t seem terrible. “I have Davu.” The dragon struggled to keep up, running into Elaina’s feet.

“When Davu is older, both of you might be allowed in the forest together without other warriors.”

Elaina recalled her experiences in the forest, and the many times she was in danger. Though she spent all her nights on fiveral tree branches, she did have close encounters with dangerous animals. “I suppose that makes sense.” She took an arrow out of her quiver and grasped her bow. A bat flew above Davu. The baby dragon jumped, trying to catch it with his teeth. Davu missed then landed on a bush, scaring a mouse out of its hole, pounding his feet against dead leaves, as he ran after it, backward, sideways, then forward. Elaina shook her head. “Hunting is going to be difficult with Davu.”

Davu sulkily crawled around in circles until he got his bearings and figured out how to crawl to Elaina. “I wasn’t aware that I was such a burden.”

Elaina gave Davu an encouraging pat. “It’s alright, Davu. You just need practice. Stay quiet and I will get something for you. I can teach you more about animals and how to attack them.”

Davu curled up on a rock. “Do you have any idea how humiliating it is to have someone hunt for me after waiting in an egg for a hundred fifty years?”

Elaina paused as she pondered Davu’s question.

Davu responded with a growl that sounded more like a whimper. “You don’t.”

“I’m not going to let you starve. I don’t mind getting food for you.” Elaina pushed past earlyberry bushes, scaring a small fox that darted in front of her. An arrow flew from Elaina’s bow. She curled up on a log while Davu hungrily ate the red fox.

“Can we go back to bed now?” Davu seemed more comfortable if he could nudge her hand. Elaina gently rested her hand on Davu’s nose.
